2014 Committee Profiles

Arthur Mehta

Arthur Mehta

President

Arthur is a graduating student from the B.Math program at Carleton University. He will be attending Carleton for a MSc in Pure Math. He served as president of the Carleton University Mathematics and Statistics Society (CUMathSoc) for the academic year 2013-2014. He also served as the president of the Carleton University Chess Club for the academic years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. During this period he was president of the 2014 Canadian University Chess Championship (CUCC) organizing committee. He has done volunteer work with for the Math Kangaroo children's math competition. He also was on team Carleton for the 2013 international competition in Mathematical Modeling, and received an honorable mention. He is currently researching Operator Theory but has a wide interest in topics in Pure Math. These include Number Theory, Group Theory and Diophantine Equations. Outside of school, Arthur enjoys exercise and spending time with family. He also does some volunteer tutoring with gifted high school students.

Kerry

Kerry Cerqueira

Keynote Coordinator

Kim Crosbie

Kim Crosbie

Member of Finance Committee

Kim Crosbie graduated with a Bachelor of Math in Computational and Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Carleton University. Her main academic interests include design and analysis of algorithms and discrete mathematics. In her spare time Kim can be found mentoring students, taking dance classes and singing about anything and everything (including the latest theorem she’s proved). In September, she will be starting her master’s degree in Computer Science.

Steven Wu

Steven Wu

Inspector of Nothing

Steven is entering his 4th year of B.Math Honours, Major in Statistics & Minor in Computer Science after finishing a year's worth of co-op terms at one of Ottawa's top tech start-ups, 360pi, where he worked on test automation. Recently, as a response to the 2014 NASA Hackathon Alert! Alert! space visualization challenge, he co-created a Twitterbot (@astrotweetbot) that actively listens for tweets from you asking it for cool sky phenomena above your head and responds with its best up-to-the-minute recommendations. Topics wise, Steven is interested in anything that lies in the intersection of statistics and software, with specific attention to applications in sports. Taking this summer off to create, self-learn, and travel, he hopes to pursue his M.Sc in a data science related stream.

Anja Radakovic

Anja Radakovic

The Best Person Ever

Anja just graduated from her B.Math Honours degree from Carleton University. Her research interest lies primarily in cryptography, but aside from her overall interest in mathematics, she also managed to complete a Minor in both Psychology and Biology. When she isn't busy with either her textbooks or her Kobo, she can be found playing various sports and spending time with family and friends. Anja starts teacher's college next year, where she hopes to teach her jaded views of math and biology to young, naïve minds.

Tom Morrice

Tom Morrice

Tom Morrice is a student graduating from Carleton University at the end of the summer 2014 with a B.Math (combined honours in Math and Economics). He re-entered the world of undergraduate studies as a mature student after a successful business career in the realm of military and security equipment marketing, development and maintenance. Tom has served as VP – Finance for the Carleton University Mathematics and Statistics Society (CUMathSoc) for 3 years and heads the finance committee of the CUMC Organising Committee. Tom’s other interests include: touch football, intramural soccer, movies, and playing cards in The MathSoc room.

Michelle Kovesi

Michelle Kovesi

Head of Marketing

Michelle graduated this year from a Bachelor of Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science. During her time at Carleton she was very involved with the Math Society, where she served as VP, President, and also founded the Eulers - the math department's soccer team. Next year she is excited to head across the pond where she will pursue an MSc in Mathematics and the Foundations of Computer Science at Oxford. When she is not reading up on algebra she enjoys rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, and traveling.

Kim Nguyen b.k.a King Kimbit

Volunteer Coordinator

Kim is currently between years in her studies of mathematics with a minor in Spanish. She knows some of the words in Kerry's bio. During her time at Carleton, Kim has served as First Year Rep, VP Social, and Vice President for the Carleton Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics Society. Kim has also served as an executive for the Carleton University Dance Crew, Vietnamese Students Association, and as a chartering member of the Sigma Omega chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

While her achievements in the math world are not as spectacular as those of her colleagues (or of any other math student really), Kim is an accomplished and internationally recognized spoken word artist under the stage name King Kimbit.
